Exceeding Expectations By Lisa April Smith

Jack Morgan has meticulously and successfully staged his own suicide leaving behind his beloved-daughters Charlotte (Charlie) and Amelia and their step-mother Petal his current wife.  Upon hearing the devastating news Amelia suffers a breakdown and Charlie is faced with the daunting task of picking up the pieces. Charlie is 23 years old and has lived a charmed life but all that is about to change as her step-mother leaves her and her sister penniless and she is forced to make a life of her own with only herself to rely on. Charlie is determined to uncover the reason for her father’s suicide and along the way uncovers a tangled web of mystery and revelations.

Raul Francesco, a young Cuban attorney, has a chance encounter with Charlie in her step-mother’s lawyer’s office and becomes a willing participant in her search for the truth of her father’s death as well as her search for herself. This journey will take Charlie from Palm Beach to New York and Paris as the truth of her father’s life is revealed and the building of her own life is achieved.

This is a captivating story with a sublime mix of suspense and intrigue combined with a sophisticated tale of romance. The story is written with great attention to detail and splashed with authenticity and realism. It traverses the time periods of the 1930-1940’s in Paris and 1950–1960’s in Palm Beach Florida as told in first person narrative by Charlie.

Charlie is a character that is totally captivating as she carries you along on her journey. She grows within herself to become a strong, intelligent and capable young woman who has claimed and cherishes her independence. Raul is a strong, intelligent and fascinating character and the relationship that is forged between these two characters is a delight to see unfold. All the characters woven into this story are well defined and contribute a great deal to its drama and intensity.

It is apparent that a great deal of research went into the writing of this book which I thoroughly appreciate as it serves to enrich and bring to life the background of the story. The author has a great sense of sophistication to her writing which I find fascinating as it kept me totally involved in the story; the truth is I had a hard time putting this book down!!

I highly recommend Exceeding Expectations to anyone who enjoys an intelligently written and captivating romantic/suspense story, this is a real page-turner.

Last One Chosen By Stephen Woodfin

This is a book that is totally captivating from the onset as Stephen Woodfin has woven together a story that is compelling and suspenseful yet a profound reminder of the true meaning of loyalty and love.

Last One Chosen is a fast-paced emotional legal thriller that explores the goodness of mankind in a unique and thought provoking fashion. It also brings to the surface the overzealousness on the part of those who determine they are above the law and go to extreme lengths to accomplish their own agenda.

Scientist Joshua Issacharoff who has been living in obscurity in a small town as a heating and air conditioning repairman is arrested by Homeland Security. He finds himself facing the death penalty for espionage and the government agents prosecuting his case will use any means possible to accomplish their goals. Two lawyers attempting to defend Joshua are hindered at every turn yet are devoted to helping their client and expose the truth.

This is a story of tremendous friendship and loyalty a portrayal of freedom and justice written in rich detail. The characters are deeply portrayed and defined with a true sense of realism. The essence of freedom and loyalty are palpable as you experience the outstanding writing in this book. The attention to detail and research put into this book is evident and lend to the overall feeling conveyed.
